Role Title: PostgreSQL Database Administrator
Fully Remote
Full time
Salary: $120K + PTO without medical insurance
Required Skills
- Minimum 10 years of strong experience as a PostgreSQL Database Administrator supporting large-scale enterprise applications.
- Extensive experience with AWS RDS PostgreSQL, including architecture, setup, configuration, administration, and management.
- Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL architecture, configuration, performance tuning, and administration.
- Minimum 8 years of hands-on experience developing and reviewing complex PL/pgSQL functions, procedures, triggers, and other database objects.
- Strong SQL and PL/pgSQL programming skills.
- Expertise in database performance tuning, optimization, and troubleshooting.
- Experience with database security, user management, encryption, and access controls.
- Experience implementing backup, recovery, snapshots, and point-in-time recovery strategies.
- Experience designing database schemas, access patterns, indexing, and locking strategies.
- Experience with production monitoring, incident management, and capacity planning.
- Hands-on experience with shell scripting (Bash/Shell) and Python for database automation.
- Experience with AWS CloudWatch and database monitoring tools.
- Familiarity with DevOps tools such as GitHub, Bitbucket, Bamboo, and Jenkins.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and support global teams.
- Willingness to participate in after-hours on-call support.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with MySQL and Oracle databases.
- Experience supporting Health and Human Services (HHS) applications or large-scale government database environments.

Responsibilities
Architecture & Database Design
- Architect, design, and implement PostgreSQL databases on AWS RDS for large-scale enterprise applications.
- Configure parameter groups, option groups, and security groups.
- Design scalable database schemas, access patterns, and locking strategies.
- Support environments containing 2,000+ tables across multiple schemas.
Database Administration
- Install, configure, maintain, and optimize PostgreSQL databases.
- Ensure database availability, reliability, scalability, and high performance.
- Configure Multi-AZ deployments for high availability.
- Manage users, roles, permissions, and database security.
- Implement encryption and access control policies.
Performance Tuning
- Perform database performance analysis and optimization.
- Troubleshoot production database issues and resolve performance bottlenecks.
- Conduct capacity planning and recommend infrastructure improvements.
Backup & Recovery
- Configure automated backups, snapshots, and point-in-time recovery.
- Develop and maintain backup and disaster recovery procedures.
- Follow operational runbooks to ensure reliable database operations.
Monitoring & Automation
- Configure monitoring and alerting using AWS CloudWatch and related tools.
- Develop Shell/Bash/Python scripts to automate routine database administration tasks.
- Support production monitoring, incident response, and operational excellence.
Collaboration
- Work closely with application development teams to understand database models and optimize application performance.
- Provide proactive database tuning and technical guidance.
- Support business-critical applications by ensuring optimal database performance and availability.
