UX Designer
Position Overview
The Metropolitan Council is seeking an experienced UX Designer to support the Fare Collection System Upgrade for Metro Transit. This role involves designing public-facing websites and complex back-office applications within an Agile framework. The UX Designer will collaborate closely with product owners, engineers, and business stakeholders to deliver high‑quality, accessible, and intuitive user experiences.

The Metropolitan Council is seeking an experienced UX Designer to support the Fare Collection System Upgrade for Metro Transit. This role involves designing public-facing websites and complex back-office applications within an Agile framework. The UX Designer will collaborate closely with product owners, engineers, and business stakeholders to deliver high‑quality, accessible, and intuitive user experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead user research activities including interviews, persona development, and usability testing to inform design decisions.
- Design intuitive and accessible user interfaces for public-facing and internal applications that meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
- Create wireframes, high‑fidelity mockups, user flows, and interactive prototypes for review and iteration.
- Work collaboratively with cross‑functional teams in an Agile environment, participating in stand‑ups, sprint planning, and design reviews.
- Conduct user testing, synthesize insights, and iterate designs based on feedback and usability findings.
- Present design concepts and rationale to stakeholders through demos, walkthroughs, and design review sessions.
- Ensure consistency with branding, design systems, accessibility guidelines, and universal design principles.
- Document interaction patterns, component guidelines, and handoff specifications for development teams.
- Audit and refine existing screens to improve usability, accessibility, and consistency.
- Support knowledge transfer activities and contribute to continuous design improvements.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in UX design for web-based applications.
- 4+ years designing accessible interfaces compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA or higher.
- 5+ years of experience creating wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity mockups.
- 3+ years of experience in information architecture and interaction design.
- 2+ years of experience working in an Agile development environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in UX Design, HCI, Graphic Design, or a related field.
- Experience applying accessibility, inclusive design, and universal design principles.
- Strong background in user research, usability testing, and data-driven design.
- Experience with responsive and adaptive design across devices.
- Experience with mobile UX related to ticketing or payment systems.
- Familiarity with front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Blazor).
- Understanding of transit fare systems, ticketing workflows, or rider behavior analytics.
- Proficiency with Figma and modern design tools.
- Strong communication, presentation, and documentation skills.
- UX certifications or formal accessibility/Agile training.
